Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as the date palm, is a flowering plant species in the palm family Arecaceae, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit called dates. They are grown commercially in Central Australia where there is a long, hot growing season and low humidity. A slow growing crop, date palms can grow to 20m tall and live for 100 years. Our favourite variety is the Medjool which is on our weekly grocery shopping list.
